T.G.I.F. Friday: Volume 11
Welcome to “Thank God I’m FI” Friday, Volume #11!
Here are some things I really like and that you might too.
Finance Articles
Can You Retire Early With 1 Million Dollars? (Retire By 40) – “You will need a lot of luck to make early retirement work with a million dollars. I was very lucky that the stock market performed so well since 2012. Someone who retires in 2020 might not have the same luck.”
Adding Accelerant: Can A Side Hustle Cause Faster Burnout? (XRAYVSN) – “Is this really the time that you want to pile on additional endeavors such as a side hustle?”
Video
Do not watch the video below on your phone please, you will be doing it a huge disservice. Go to your computer or better yet cast it to your bigger TV. One of the best nature videos I’ve seen in a while, and I watch many. You can’t help but feel overwhelmed at the sheer beauty watching this, and you’ll feel less stressed too.

Who’s Inspired Me
Many of you probably know about Nick Vujicic as he rose to fame about 10 years ago, but I just discovered his story recently. He was was born with tetra-amelia syndrome, a rare congenital disorder characterized by the absence of all four limbs. When he was 10 he attempted suicide.
He eventually found the power within to take control of his life and graduated from college with a double major in accounting and financial planning. He then became a motivational speaker and has inspired millions with disabilities, and given them hope. His message isn’t just for those with disabilities however, it’s for everyone. It boils down to being happy with who you are, and what you have. And coming from someone with no limbs, it’s more than powerful.
This feature on him on the Australian version of 60 minutes covers his story well.
What I’m Grateful For
The career I’ve had in serving our county and military members. Working for the Department of Defense has given me purpose and allowed me to give direct support to the amazing men and women of our military and to military members of our closest allies.
Lyrically Speaking
A pawn shop ain’t no place for a wedding ring
Six months from now what will that money mean?
You shop around looking for memories, somehow
The satisfaction don’t come that easy
From “Pawn Shop Ain’t No Place For A Wedding Ring”, by Whiskeytown.
I was a huge Ryan Adams fan long before he became famous (in music circles at least). Most Ryan Adams fans don’t know he got his start in two country-punk bands, Patty Duke Syndrome and Whiskeytown. The latter was a seminal band in the 1990’s in what is now called the “Americana” genre. I remember seeing them live in a tiny bar in Baltimore and they were lay-down drunk. I think I was too. It was a rowdy show.
The four lines above from “Pawn shop” are so awesome and right on point with the journey to FI. Don’t go shopping looking for memories, satisfaction doesn’t come that easy at all.
Miscellaneous
Why Everything Is Getting Louder – “The tech industry is producing a rising din. Our bodies can’t adapt.” (my companion piece to this article is here)
How ultra-processed food took over your shopping basket – “Is ultra-processed food making us ill and driving the global obesity crisis?”
What a brief jog can do for your brain
Thanks Dave for the feature. Much appreciated 😊
de nada!
Happy Friday Dave. I hadn’t heard Nick Vujicic’s story, thanks for sharing that.
Max
yep, have a great weekend!
Jason Hatfields video was fantastic. The green field with waves of wind, and the shot from behind the waterfall with trees in the background were my favorite. It reminds me that next time I’m in those situations/experiences I need to stop and take it in. Thanks for sharing.
You’re welcome, there’s so much great stuff out there like that now, especially with drones, it’s amazing what folks are doing!
i like that amaricana music a lot. that’s what most of our musician friends here play locally. also, mrs. smidlap left on an old lucinda williams recording on repeat a few days ago when she went out to an event. it even included “it’s a long way to the top if you want to rock n’ roll” from ac/dc. i must have listened to that whole album 3-4 times through.
it’s good to have done a job you can be proud of.
I’m a massive Americana fan and you’ll see lots of bands from that genre in this series, so stay tuned. Hope I can turn you on to some ones you don’t know about.
And speaking of Lucinda, she released the second single from her upcoming album literally today, your timing is impeccable. Have a listen.
Thanks for the video, I put it up on my big TV and it was fantastic! Very peaceful and relaxing with amazing footage. I look forward to your Friday posts, they are inspirational and motivate me to get cracking to write an article for each Monday.
Isn’t is so amazing that we have these things at our fingertips?
And thanks so much for the kudos on the TGIF series, it’s my goal to not just throw some links up but to put effort into finding really good stuff, so glad to hear I’m hitting the mark!
Yay, curation so I don’t have to try to find this stuff. I will cast the video to the TV later this weekend. I expect it to be nice. 🙂
Thanks for stopping by!
+1 on the ultra-processed food article. Ever since reading “Deep Nutrition” a couple months ago we’ve completely altered our diet to try and remove as much processed food as we can. We’ve lowered our carb intake and stopped buying foods that have vegetable oils in them. It’s pretty incredible that we are already seeing some marked results which just further reinforces we’re making the right changes.
That book is on my wait list, and you guys are money. Vegetable oils are not good for us, and the latest science is really throwing the carb/fat argument on it’s head. It’s probably different for different people, but the main thing is to not eat the SAD (standard American diet), which is junk.
