T.G.I.F. Friday: Volume 35

Welcome to “Thank God I’m FI” Friday, Volume #35!

Here are some things I really like and that you might too.

Finance Articles

Saving Money Through Routine (The Three Year Experiment) – “Routine is necessary for maximum efficiency in life, and maximum efficiency is very often necessary for saving money.”

The Flames Of Burnout Have Risen Again. FI Makes It Worse (XRAYVSN) – “So what’s next? To be honest I am not sure….”

Video

If you play guitar, watch this cover of the Tears For Fears song “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” from Andy McKee and come to grips with how much you suck.  He plays the vocal line, synth lines, and pretty much everything one one acoustic guitar. A master at work.

Here’s another, simply amazing.

Who’s Inspired Me

The Nepali Sherpas who just completed the first ever summit of K2 in winter.

Until last week K2, the second highest mountain in the world, was the only of the fourteen 8000 meter peaks on the planet that had not been climbed in winter.  An all-Nepali team headed by sherpas Nirmal Purja Pun Magar and Mingma Gyalje Sherpa changed that with an epic climb that culminated in 10 people summiting together.  If you don’t know mountaineering, this is a monumental accomplishment and one of the last great “firsts” out there.  K2 is known as “the savage mountain” and is far more difficult than Mt. Everest and most of the 8000 meter peaks.

You can read about their amazing climb here.

What I’m Grateful For

Winter. Unlike many I actually love the seasons and need them, and even though our winters here in the mid-Atlantic aren’t as cold as they used to be, I can still drive about 2 hours and climb some ice.  It finally got cold enough to do so, and I’m psyched.

Lyrically Speaking

We move so quickly
Who knows where the time goes
Where does this road lead?
No one knows, no one knows

From “Litany (Life Goes On)“, by Guadalcanal Diary

It was 1988 and I was given a mix tape cassette by a girl who worked at the hardware store with me, and it changed me.  Until then I listened to mainstream rock, because that’s all we really had in Baltimore.  By the late 80’s hair metal was taking over everything, and I was sick of it.  Then I got this mix tape and Litany (Life Goes On) starts it off.  Guadalcanal Who?  I was floored by the sounds, and it introduced me to other great bands like Flesh For Lulu, The Feelies, and the Lemonheads who refreshingly sounded nothing like hair metal.  Guadalcanal Diary were signed to a major label and had a pretty big cult following but never broke through the mainstream.  It’s a shame because their records are awesome.

And the four lines above from Litany go nicely with my post from a few weeks back.

Miscellaneous

‘Fat but fit’ is a myth when it comes to heart health, new study shows“The negative effects of excess body fat on heart health can’t be canceled out by maintaining an active lifestyle, according to new research.”

Thanks Dave for highlighting a post of mine on TGIF. It definitely has been a rough period for me at work right now but there is potential for it to get much better so I am hopeful

  2. i like the cover art on that guadalcanal diary song and the song itself. i was slow to catch on to that kind of music but finally found it after a vetting period.

i overhydrate to keep the kidney stones at bay. i like that option better than cutting down on the vino. cheers!

Awesome album cover, I saw myself in that kid. You should check out the whole album for sure, to me it’s their best. They have 4 studio full lengths I think, all are good tho.

That’s pretty cool about the sherpas climbing K2. I had no idea the kind of life these sherpas lived until recently. I just watched a documentary about a (western) kid who goes and lives and works with the sherpas only living off their super low wages. It’s called The Porter and its on youtube. Those sherpas live a brutal life.

I saw that documentary, and there’s a few others out there as well. I’ve also climbed with Sherpas in Nepal and been to Mt. Everest, they’re amazing people and so kind. Yes, they live hard lives.

The Andy McKee video is amazing!

Wish I could play like that, although that skill level requires years of practice and dedication. Obviously, I spend too much time in front of the computer and reading your excellent T.G.I.F.s.

    Have a great weekend!

McKee is a freak he’s so good. I could watch him all day, he sends me down YouTube rabbit holes….

Andy McKee is unbelievably awesome. Plus this song bought me back to my youth. It’s amazing how the human brain works. I can remember the words to every Tears For Fears song from the 1980s but can’t recall where I left my car keys today.

  5. Thanks for the mention, Dave. Hope you are well! Glad to hear you love winter. It’s a tough season for me!!

  6. Mr. Tako says:

Enjoy the ice climbing Dave! I’m not much of a winter fan, so I’m hoping it’ll be spring soon.

Hey, Dave. I think you’ll see this comment. I hope so. I just wanted to say that I look through hundreds of PF articles every week. I’m not joking when I say that your TGIF installments are what I look forward to most each week. Just thought you should know. 😉

    • J.D. says:

Wait. WTF. I left that comment before reading your post. Then I go up and see you’ve linked to one of my FAVORITE SONGS EVER this week. Nobody knows “Litany (Life Goes On)”. But you do! Nice.

Dude, you don’t know how much I appreciate your support of my blog. And so awesome to hear of another GD fan, great minds think alike right? I’m a music junkie and listen to A LOT of unknown and obscure stuff. I’ve posted a lot of big name artists on my TGIF so far but will start trying to highlight some more unknowns and indie gems going forward. I’d like to introduce folks to some awesome music, that would give me smiles. Cheers bro and thanks again!
