T.G.I.F. Friday: Volume 50

Welcome to “Thank God I’m FI” Friday, Volume #50!

Holy schmoly I can’t believe I’ve done 50 of these, and they’re more popular than ever – thank you all for your support!

Here are some things I really like and that you might too.

Finance Articles

Go Big, Then Stop (Of Dollars And Data) – “Finding the right balance between saving and enjoying life will never be an easy task.”

Clutter and Obesity – There IS a Connection (Maximum Gratitude, Minimal Stuff) – “There is scientific evidence that clutter and obesity have a relationship.”

Video

Ugh, yeah, that’s a massive grizzly and holy shit there’s no fence. This ain’t a zoo folks, this is Katmai National Park in Alaska, and these folks are really lucky.  The size of this monster is chilling….

Who’s Inspired Me

Bethany Hamilton.

Many of you know the story of Bethany Hamilton, but if you don’t you need to.  Hamilton was a world class surfer when she was attacked by a tiger shark in Hawaii in 2003 and lost her arm.  She eventually started surfing again – literally one month later, and rose back to the top of the professional surfing ranks.  I had seen the movie about her life called “Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable” (<– affiliate link) when it came out in 2019, but watched it again recently because the story is that inspiring.  You can check her out at her site here.

What I’m Grateful For

Water under the bridge…  I met up with an old friend recently and we both decided to grow up and let the water flow.  What’s done is done and we’ve moved on, good times are ahead.

Lyrically Speaking

You can’t always get what you want
But if you try sometimes, well, you just might find
You get what you need

From “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” by The Rolling Stones

In the great Beatles vs. Stones debate I’ve always been solidly in the Beatles camp.  But that doesn’t mean I don’t love the Stones, I love ’em a lot.  Charlie Watts, the legendary drummer for the Rolling Stones died Tuesday at the age of 80.  Like Ringo Starr of the Beatles, Watts was the perfect drummer for the band he was in.  He wasn’t the flashiest or the most technical, but he knew when to play and when to get out of the way.  He laid the backbeat for songs that will live on forever, and played right up until the end.  R.I.P. Mr. Watts, you made a mark.

The timeless lyrics from the Stones classic above are all you need to know when deciding between wants and needs.

Miscellaneous

Unlocking the ‘gut microbiome’ – and its massive significance to our health – “Scientists are only just discovering the enormous impact of our gut health – and how it could hold the key to everything from tackling obesity to overcoming anxiety and boosting immunity.”

IQ tests can’t measure it, but ‘cognitive flexibility’ is key to learning and creativity – “The truth is that some of the greatest achievements by our species have primarily relied on qualities such as creativity, imagination, curiosity and empathy.”

Knowledge and Religious Belief: How Secular Assumptions Can Sideline Heterodox Viewpoints – “In humankind’s unending pursuit of knowledge, one of the great challenges is differentiating between assumptions and truth.”

Loved your “Water under the bridge” comment. I also did this recently. A year ago I had a huge blow up with my closest friend (best friends for 35 years!). We’ve recently rekindled and are healing together. Her analogy was to behave like dogs and kick some grass over that sh** and move on! So we are.

HA, love that dog analogy. Our time here is short, we shouldn’t waste it with grudges and immature crap. Like others I keep learning these lessons. Thanks for the comment!

  2. i can agree with all the data in the “save early” post. however…like the caveat at the end i happened to grow up without the option to experience some common things others do that cost money. so i spent a bunch as soon as i started earning just because i had to know what some of these nice things were like. the math says one thing but all worked out in the end even with a later start.

maybe i’ll see a bear at smidlap-con in a week or so.

Late start or not you killed it. And if you do see a bear at least it won’t be a grizz, black bears are skittish. Throw it a mufferito! Enjoy the Daks!

  3. You always get what you need. It so funny because you don’t always realize it at that time but it’s so true.
