T.G.I.F. Friday: Volume 106
Welcome to “Thank God I’m FI” Friday, Volume #106!
Here are some things I really like and that you might too.
Financial Independence/Work Life/Retirement Articles
How Passion Fuels Persistence (Budget Life List) – “I can accept the pitfalls and downfalls of my career and not hold resentment towards working when most have off. That’s a billboard sign that my passion parallels my profession.“
The Fallacy of Side Hustles: We’re Being Played (Financial Fives) – “There is no shortage of hustle culture out there, telling us all the wonderful side hustles you can pursue, like filling out 56 surveys for $10.”
Video
I’ve been getting back to doing sprint workouts once or twice a week in an effort to maintain more muscle and get my running fitness back up to par. Sprints hurt. And it’s all about form. So watch this incredible footage of the masters, including Usain Bolt and Tyson Gay. The rolling camera footage of the fastest humans on the planet is enthralling.
What I’m Grateful For
The persistent red fox who kept me on my toes for hours while camping last week. She’d move in stealthily, sniff around my tent, patrol the perimeter of my campsite, all the while hoping to find a blessed crumb or two. I’d scare her off and she’d come right back from a different side, as if to say “really dude, I’m better at this game than you”. As annoying as it was at the time, I always appreciate those encounters with wild creatures afterwards.
Lyrically Speaking
Is this the best it gets
Before I’m laid to rest?
From “Is This the Best It Gets” by Budapest
Oh how I love this band… Budapest’s debut album Too Blind To Hear is, in my humble opinion, one of the best debuts of the first decade of the 2000’s. I love every song. It was released in 2002 and it reflects the post-9/11 somberness experienced by so many. To make it even more somber, the lead guitarist who plays on the record committed suicide just before it was released. The band carried on and toured in his honor, and they garnered a huge following but only made one more record before breaking up, 2004’s Head Towards The Dawn.
As for the lyrics above, I sometimes ask myself that question. Shit, don’t we all? I don’t expect an answer or have one myself, all i can do is keep trying to be better every day.
Miscellaneous
Increasing steps by 3,000 per day can lower blood pressure in older adults – “This study sought to determine if older adults with hypertension could receive these benefits by moderately increasing their daily walking, which is one of the easiest and most popular forms of physical activity for this population.”
This Is The Largest Map of The Human Brain Ever Made – “Researchers catalogue more than 3,000 different types of cell in our most complex organ.”
The big idea: could we use music like medicine? – “We know that music influences our emotions, but could it improve physical health too?“
Thanks again for interesting thoughts & links. I especially enjoyed the link to the blog by Fives about side hustles. I have three side hustles… Now I’m FIRE’d from full time academia, I do sessional lectures/lab sessions. Which keep the wolf (or fox 😉) from the door (or tent) during the winter months only. We’re (my wife and I) very lucky to both be FIRE’d, and we appreciate every hour I work, and every moment of life, every bike ride, every hike and every opportunity.
Great post as always, keem ’em coming.
As a former college instructor I’ve sometimes thought about sessional lectures but I’m hesitant because of the relative lack of time flexibility when compared to my current graphic design hustle. I really value my time flexibility which is near 100%. Thanks for the comment and kudos!
Great post Dave, thanks for sharing the links to the other posts, I hadn’t had a chance to read them until now. I’ve just started to increase my steps by taking brisk walks, and I love it. Trying to log in 3-4 miles a day, it makes sitting at work a little more palatable knowing that I’ll get my steps in afterward. As always, thanks for sharing these TGIF’s love them!
I used to be biased against walking as exercise but the research has proven me wrong. While harder exercise is still better, all movement is good movement. Thanks for the comment and kudos!
I really enjoy these posts for introducing me to new music and reminding me of similar experiences (only campers in Waterton Lakes NP in snow in May and the deer kept coming up to our tent to see what was going on lol!)
Animals are smart enough to know that we humans always have food on us. And glad you like the music Josie, thanks for stopping by!
Thank you for the feature in T.G.I.F. Friday: Volume 106! 🥂
My pleasure, keep the great posts coming!
