T.G.I.F. Friday: Volume 131

Welcome to “Thank God I’m FI” Friday, Volume #131!

Here are some things I really like and that you might too.

Financial Independence/Work Life/Retirement Articles

How to Get Rich with Minimalism (Maximum Gratitude, Minimal Stuff) – “By my conservative estimates, these four minimalist choices could save you between $5,759 and $8,592 every year.”

The Red Bull Rampage Mountain Bike Freestyle event started in 2001 and is bigger than ever. The best freestyle and stunt mountain bikers in the world descend near-vertical terrain doing flips, tricks, massive gap jumps and all sorts of things that make your eyes bug out. To date, this event has been solely the domain of men since men are more stupid than women and have no issue literally risking their lives by throwing double back flips off 100 foot cliffs.  But this years RBR saw women compete for the first time!  Below is the first ever run from a woman in the Red Bull Rampage from Robin Goomes. It’s a POV video, she does two back flips and throws numerous well-timed f-bombs during her run.  Total badass!

What I’m Grateful For

That my 95 year old Godmother aced her cancer surgery and should make a full recovery.

Lyrically Speaking

Babe, let’s move to Sicily
Just you and me
And the Mediterranean sea
I’ll work on a scallop boat
That would keep us afloat

From “Sicily” by Youth Group

Youth Group are an Aussie band with numerous albums dating back to 2000. Their sound is straight-up indie rock with nods to Teenage Fanclub, Rogue Wave, and the Shout Out Louds. They’ve had a good deal of success over the years, touring with big acts such as Death Cab For Cutie, Kings of Leon, and Coldplay.  In 2006 they broke big with a cover of Alphaville’s “Forever Young” which landed on a US TV show.  They haven’t released an album since 2019 but as far as I can see they’re still active.

As for the lyrics above, so many people want to reach financial independence to lose their job and travel. Or move to a place like Sicily and live out a dream. Kinda reminds me of the parable of the Mexican fisherman, except with scallops.

Miscellaneous

‘Weekend warrior’ physical activity may help protect against more than 200 diseases – “Compared with inactivity, a weekend warrior pattern of exercise (concentrating most moderate-to-vigorous physical activity in one to two days during the week) or a more evenly distributed physical activity pattern were associated with similarly lower risks of diseases across 16 categories — from heart and digestive conditions to mental health and neurological illnesses.

Charting the evolution of nuclear energy – “Nuclear fission’s stalled growth might give way to fusion’s clean energy potential.

SpaceX catches returning rocket in mid-air, turning a fanciful idea into reality – “Starships are meant to fly. It sure as hell flew today. So let’s get ready for the next one.

Yeah thanks buddy, we’re blessed with the miracle of modern surgical procedures and she’s a very resilient person!

  2. Soltist says:

Honorable mention to the Nobel Price for Economics, they kinda found out why some former colonies become poor and stay poor and why some get rich (has to do with what kind of institutions remain in those countries, extractive or inclusive in economic gains etc.).

  3. Chris says:

Rampage is equal mixes of awesome and insanity, my local friend Mark competed and as expected with many also injured badly there. As for this years event, local resident and fellow MTB club member Veae Verbeeck competed in the women’s competition, she rips and is super inspiring.

Injuries were quite bad this year, I haven’t watched all the highlights yet but I’m expecting some serious carnage. I’ll take my fast/flowy single track over that craziness, thank you 🙂
