T.G.I.F. Friday: Volume 2
Welcome to “Thank God I’m FI” Friday, Volume #2!
Here are some things I really like and that you might too.
Finance Articles
What I Love (And Don’t) About Working Part-Time – Jessica from the Fioneers is part time like I am and I found her experience with it to be very similar to mine. I personally think going part time at your W2 is an awesome and underrated way to slowly de-stress and sample a bit of the retired life, especially if you’re already FI.
The Strength To Hold – Mr. Tako Escapes is one of my favorite FIRE blogs and he explores the symbiotic relationship between climbing and finances in this post. I’ve been guilty of that before…. 😉

Who’s Inspired Me
Rand Abbott became paralyzed from the waist down when a doctor accidentally cut his spinal cord during a routine back surgery.
Yeah, you read that right. Can you imagine…
He’s not bitter, he didn’t adopt the victim mentality, he moved on quickly. He started rock climbing again. During the brief 2019 government shutdown many national parks were still open but with no rangers on duty and no services. People trashed Joshua Tree National Park near his home and he used his own money to buy cleaning supplies and cleaned up after them. He then convinced many others to help him. Listen to his story here.
If you’ve never heard of servant leadership, this guy epitomizes it.
What I’m Grateful For
The clean and crisp sound of my acoustic guitar with a new set of strings and a good song to play.
Lyrically Speaking
If only I’d thought of the right words
I could have held on to your heart
If only I’d thought of the right words
I wouldn’t be breaking apart
All my pictures of you
From “Pictures of You”, by The Cure
If only…
Those two words. I remember this song coming on while I was driving after a breakup a long time ago. I knew those lines above were going to stab me in the heart, but I sang them aloud anyway, which made it that much more painful. If only…..
Regrets are part of life, I moved on. But what a devastatingly great song.
You may have regrets with your financial past. Don’t keep saying if only I saved more, if only I invested. Chalk it up to life, and move on. There’s no better time to start anew than right now.

How smart exercise keeps you younger for longer…. the 20/80 ratio for high/low intensity is something I’ve been targeting for a few years now
500 Years Later, MIT Proves That Da Vinci’s Bridge Design Works
that’s right, dave. take the lessons that your history has given you and learn something while looking forward. i got divorced once. then i met mrs. smidlap. 15 happy years later i think to myself “maybe the problems in that starter marriage weren’t all me.”
i was thinking of writing an exercise intensity piece soon. i want folks to realize you don’t have to be olympic level or spend hours on this but breaking a sweat a couple of times a week will do you wonders. i got pretty fit in 20 minutes a day/5 days a week without altering diet or my prolific wine consumption. they were pretty hard minutes. run for 20….stretch….20 sit-ups…..leave.
You should do the piece Freddy. It’s clear how much exercise/fitness and money are related. Healthy body, healthy mind, better choices, more mufferitos.
The Cure’s Disintegration album is extraordinary and one of my all time favorites. Great mention! And great way to tie it into FI. Can’t wait to listen to Rand Abbott’s story – that sounds extraordinary too.
I agree Katie, that album is one of those timeless pieces. It came out when hair metal dominated and just flew in the face of all that crap and rose above.
Thanks for the great mention Dave!
You’re welcome, great post!
