T.G.I.F. Friday: Volume 10

Welcome to “Thank God I’m FI” Friday, Volume #10!

Here are some things I really like and that you might too.

Finance Articles

I’m Glad My Parents Crushed My College Dreams (Financial Mechanic) – “I thought I had done everything right, but when it came down to it, my parents told me I couldn’t go to my dream university.”

Living The FI Life: The Struggles (Young FIRE Knight) – “I’m sure I will figure out the best path for me at some point, but in the meantime the indecisiveness will continue to be something that takes up my mental capacity.”

Can We Have Prosperity Without Growth (New Yorker)

Video

I’ve seen lots of urban downhill and freeride videos, but not like this.  This guy is insane, this is next level. Holy crap…

Who’s Inspired Me

Jessica Cox was born without arms, but she didn’t let that hold her back in life.  Even though she was initially terrified of flying, she sought to become a pilot after being allowed in the cockpit of a plane.  She went on to become the first licensed armless pilot.

Cox is also a certified scuba diver and a third-degree black belt in taekwondo.  You can read about her amazing story here.

What I’m Grateful For

My cycling friends. I’m convinced that the key to getting regular exercise and becoming fit is to find an activity that you like doing, and cultivate groups of friends around that activity. When you have that, workouts aren’t seen as workouts anymore, they’re just ways to hang out with your friends.  My cycling friends push me to become better, and I will no doubt get better again this year.

Lyrically Speaking

I’ve been keeping myself busy with my books and with my tapes
Every day’s much better since I’ve slowed my drinking pace
There’s no swimming in the bottle it’s just someplace we all drown
I lost myself in sorrow lost my confidence in doubt

From “Mrs. Rita”, by The Gin Blossoms

The album “New Miserable Experience” from the Gin Blossoms is one of my desert island discs.  When it hit the airways I was in my heavy drinking days as a functional alcoholic, with no end in sight.  I vividly remember loving the four lines above from “Mrs. Rita”, because I wanted them to be true for me.

But they weren’t.

The first line was very true – even though I drank way too much, I spent much of my other time buried in books and music.  But I knew I drank way too much, and that I was ‘losing myself in sorrow, and losing my confidence in doubt’.

Finally in my 30’s after summoning the strength and discipline to beat the trauma behind my drinking, I was able to sing these four lines with honesty.

I sing them louder than ever now, and I’ve never looked back.

Miscellaneous

Half of Us Face Obesity, Dire Projections Show“People who choose to blame genetics are fooling no one but themselves, Mr. Ward said. Our genetics haven’t changed in the last 30 years.”

The killer(s) on the road: reducing your risk of automotive death“These numbers should scare anyone. If I die in the next 10 years, the most probable murder weapon is my vehicle or another vehicle on the road.” This post shows great analysis of how most deaths happen in car crashes, and how you can use that information to try to protect yourself.

  1. Great articles this week. I read The Killers on the Road twice just to make sure I absorbed everything in that article. The number of fatalities is astounding over that eighteen year period. “In particular, assume one person awoke today with the explicit instruction to kill you with their car. If you knew this, how vigilant would you be?” It’s something I think about all too often while I’m driving. I’m that annoying driver who gives a little extra space between my car and the one in front of me. I also obsessively check my mirrors. Thanks for choosing such great picks this week!

Yeah Attia went deep in that post but it’s great info. Getting hit from the left on the drivers side from someone blowing a stop sign or light is a treacherous threat. If only America didn’t worship cars so much and saw them for what they are, a tool to get around – very dangerously.

      Thanks for the kudos!

  2. i miss my running friends. they all quit or live far away or i would still be running 30-40 miles a week for the social part of it. good to see the youngsters get some feature today. it’s also good you got off the sauce…or got rid of the “need” for it.

Sounds like you need to make new running friends. You could entertain them with the story of when you thought you were running sub-7 minute 5ks but your treadmill was working with the “new math” 🙂

  3. Its always a great Friday round up when you can include a MTB video and also chat about riding 🙂 Your steady posts about getting out have helped me get in 5 rides in 7 days this week including a 30 mile day which is not usual for me.
Have an awesome weekend man !

5 out of 7 is sweet, nice dude! Maybe you should try to make the 30-milers a more frequent thing 😉

  4. Great choices for your T.G.I.F. inspirations Dave! Loved the video and reinforcing the importance of friendships, health, and exercise. You’re so right that we need to do something that we enjoy that is fun if we’re going to keep fit and active.

  5. Thanks for featuring my post! Still working on not worrying too much about what the future holds and instead enjoying the here and now and trusting I’ll figure it out. Definitely tough to do though! Those car crash statistics are pretty eye opening and wow the urban downhill biking was insane!!

    Awesome video, liked your post!

  7. Good stuff man. I recently found your site on the recommendation of Mr1500days. I appreciate the TGIF. It’s a nice style. I recently “semi-retired” in November when I was laid off. Since I followed MMM for so long and modeled his lifestyle, we (the family) are in pretty good shape. I enjoy the things you are interested in… Design, MountainBiking, FIRE. If you are ever in the Fort Collins area, lets go ride!

I owe Carl a beer, probably a few… I appreciate the kudos and I have ties to Fort Collins. A good high school buddy lives there and I’ve spent some quality time there. I’ve also done “Ride the Rockies” twice, including 2016 when it ended in Ft. Collins with a big party at Odell Brewing. Good times!

Thanks for the kudos and I’ll definitely hit you up if I get back out there!
