It’s Okay To Laugh

I’ve been blogging for about 2.5 years but have never had anything truly go viral, until now.  My infographic post from April 3rd, titled “Relative Importance in 2020, So Far”, has made it’s way around the world in ways I could never have imagined and I’m grateful but also a bit freaked out.

The tagline for my blog at the top on my header image is “Financial Independence, Early Retirement, Outdoor Adventure, Satire”.  That’s a lot to cover and I’ve been trying my best.  I purposely used the word “satire” and not “humor” for a reason.

One definition of satire:

the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people’s behaviors or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues.

Well, regular readers know that Accidental FIRE is a no-politics zone, but everything else is game.  And I strongly believe everything can be poked fun at.  My TurnipFIRE posts poke fun at things related to money and blogging, in the style of a famous satirical website.

In general my satirical posts are not as popular as my financial independence content.  But my April 3rd infographic hit paydirt, in a big way.  I’m getting email requests to use it in books, on profiles, and even at a mental health facility!

It’s been retweeted and re-Instagrammed hundreds of times and put all over every platform out there.  I got more hits from LinkedIn in one day that I had gotten from the entire 2.5 year history of my blog.  And I still can’t find who put it up there.

My friend Angela even came to my defense on one person’s Instagram post who used it with no credit back to me.  I stopped caring after a while.  Whatever, it’s not like it’s the Mona Lisa.

It’s all over meme websites, and I even got an email from someone in Indianapolis saying their local news showed it on TV!

I’m a big fan of Peter Attia’s podcast, and he put an altered version of it on his Instagram.  He has 143,000 followers.

My blog traffic has been off the charts and I’m picking up followers on all platforms at an alarming rate.   Well, alarming for me at least.  And no I still don’t feel like Tim Ferriss or Gary Vaynerchuk.

I guess this is my 15 minutes…  I should put some pants on.

We Need Humor

I’m surprised and relieved that I haven’t had any push back on the humorous nature of the graphic.  I’ve seen others get berated for being funny or making light of anything related to the current crisis we find ourselves in.

I obviously think that’s counterproductive, and the wrong way to approach life.   Of course there’s a right way and wrong way to try humor in a situation like this.  And not everyone will agree on where that line is.

But it’s not wrong to laugh when things are tough.  Humor puts people at ease.  If done well and in good taste for the situation, it serves as medicine in hard times.  It restores normalcy, and gives hope.

The ability to laugh despite experiencing grief and sadness is a blessing, and healing.  Studies show it can strengthen the immune system, reduce pain, and lower levels of psychological distress.

“A good laugh overcomes more difficulties and dissipates more dark clouds than any other one thing.” – Laura Ingalls Wilder

This mental health business posted my graphic with the hashtags #findthehumor and #laughterismedicine.  They get it.

relative importance in 2020, so far

Keep At It

There’s also a lesson here for content creators – just keep putting stuff out.  Much of it will be mediocre or even suck, but you might eventually hit a home run.  Or as I wrote in a post about my successful graphic arts side hustle:

Show up, do the work.  Show up every day.  Keep creating bad shit until you start creating some okay shit.  Then keep creating okay shit until you start creating some good shit.

Whether my viral infographic qualifies as “good shit” or not is up to you, but it did strike a chord and apparently made some folks laugh.  That was my intention, nothing more.

Mashups & Reach

Once it went viral people immediately started adding to it and doing their own versions.  Many are hilarious, and I love it.  Let’s be honest, some folks out there have time on their hands.  And I love the sloppiness 🙂

“Bra” was a popular to add:

relative importance in 2020, so far

Then there’s the drugs, alcohol, and mind-altering crowd… with some toilet paper and bras thrown in too.

relative importance in 2020, so far

We can’t forget toilet breaks, pets, and bunkers…

relative importance in 2020, so far

Regular readers know that I’m a cycling freak, and some folks at a bike club in Brisbane Australia added the bike for me, which was a glaring oversight on my part…

It's Okay To Laugh

It got around the world… if you’re not familiar Sina Weibo is basically the Chinese version of Facebook and enormous, and it made it there too…

Someone in Bulgaria decided to translate it (<– warning, Bulgarian website!) and add a line which might be the “bra” line, I have no clue. If any of my readers speak Bulgarian I’d appreciate the help…

It was very popular with coffee lovers and posted on hundreds of coffee shop social media accounts. This was from a coffee shop in Tegucigalpa, Honduras and they also took the time to translate it.  I tried figuring out what “rasurarse” and “puama” mean but they must be slang.  Any help on those would be great.

It's Okay To Laugh

Someone in Russia gets my humor and posted it here. (<–Russian site!)

If anything this shows that the world is really going through the same thing, and apparently coffee and sweatpants are things that all nations can rally around.

Someone tell the UN.

Inspired Versions

I’ve inspired a few folks to start their own blog in the past, which has always flattered me.  But I never thought I’d inspire anyone to imitate my silliness.  Yet some thought it good enough to make their own versions.

A dietitian student made a “Celiac Disease Edition” for those who eat gluten free:

It's Okay To Laugh

Someone from Texas on Twitter made this version, they don’t like folks from Oklahoma I guess:

It's Okay To Laugh

This guy made a version for healthcare workers.

relative importance in 2020, so far

I obviously get a kick out of how far and wide this simple little joke has managed to travel, and that it connected with so many around the world.

I’ve been using the World Wide Web since it’s inception in the early 1990’s and I honestly never thought I’d create something that would be shared to this extent.

I kind of feel like I won the internet, and that I should just hang it up now.  I’m actually waiting to get an email from the internet police informing me that my 15 minutes is up.  But as of this morning it’s still going on, and the darn thing keeps getting around.

So to all those who got a laugh out of my post and shared it, thank you!  Viral content is better than a virus any day 🙂

And even though these are sad and stressful times, try to find some time to laugh every day.  It’ll do you good.

  3. It sure was a great a great infographic! Made me laugh for 10 minutes straight. Then I kept seeing it popping up everywhere and it had me smiling for days upon days! Amazing what a good laugh can do during times like this.

    Dave,

I hope your 15 minutes ends SOON! (Only b/c it means this whole episode will have ended and this won’t be relevant anymore.)

Until then though, I agree we all need to continue to laugh and maintain our optimism for the future! So thanks for doing your part by finding the funny and ironic in this bizarre time that we’re all sharing. And congrats on creating something that resonates with so many people.

    Cheers!
    Chris

    • Dave @ Accidental FIRE says:

I hope it ends soon too, and “bizarre” is a great word for it.

Thanks for your support and kind words Chris, one day I’ll get back there to Utah for some mountain play and you’ll be the first to know!

  6. Wow that is funny! I had seen that info graphic a few places, didn’t realize it originated with you! A little humor seems to go a long way in these crazy times. Congrats to your viral post!

    Isaac

  7. That’s awesome, Dave! Congrats. Humor is definitely good medicine. Keep up the good work.

  8. that’s just great man. i think dave grohl once said about music that you just get together with some friends and you suck and continue and then suck a little less…you get the picture. viral content is better than a virus and i’d rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy! rock on.

    • Dave @ Accidental FIRE says:

Oh man I used to use that quote all the time, it’s one of my all time favorites! And judging by the success of my last 2 rock bands versus my blog, I think I should stick to blogging…

  9. You won the internet!! Very cool. Think I’ll head over to Instagram and post it…let’s all keep this thing going for another 15 minutes! We can say we knew you when. Congrats on the coverage, happy for you!

    • Dave @ Accidental FIRE says:

If I could get a full 30 minutes that’d be awesome. After that I’m gonna get tired of wearing pants

      Thanks dude!

  10. Ed says:

It was perfect – such a simple graphic that captured a moment. I’m a big fan of humor in challenging times. Oh, and the “hand drawn” look made it work perfectly!

  11. Pete says:

Ha. I made a comment on the original post just 5 minutes ago before reading this post. And that would definitely explain how it ended up at my office. Congratulations on your internet win!

  12. Enjoy the wave and satisfaction of creating the smiles that wash in with it

  13. RE@54 says:

Ha. One of the few times I have commented on your site and that article is posted everywhere. I wish I had said something more profound instead of “shaved my head”. Ha ha. Like you say, gotta laugh. Kudos to you. I shared the graph with my work group, as the previous commenters stated, let’s keep this going for another 15 minutes!

  14. Mr. Fate says:

Awesome and congrats. I don’t follow many and don’t pay much attention to social media, but I immediacy saw this getting shared about awfully quickly, including some of the variants. It’s funny, timely and relatable for most folks, so it deserves the attention it’s getting. As you know, I love your Turnip Fire and general brand of satire – genius stuff, my man.

Enjoy the moment and bask in the glory! While the 15 minutes of this may fade, the rest of us will always be around to enjoy the Accidental Fire “deep cuts” & high quality of content and you’ve got a bunch more along for the ride now as well!

    • Dave @ Accidental FIRE says:

So glad to have you as a reader dude, and yes I’m basking a bit. Today’s bike ride will be fun as I’ll have extra energy. Let’s keep the “deep cuts” as high quality as we can!

  15. Congratulations! That’s great. Yeah, we all need to laugh a little. Life could be worse, right?

    • Dave @ Accidental FIRE says:

Yes, it could. Thanks for all your support to my blog Joe, thankful to have you as a reader!

  16. Xrayvsn says:

This is awesome Dave 😊. Definitely need to trademark it and make t shirts.

I knew that your graphics department budget would pay off. Lol

    • Dave @ Accidental FIRE says:

Ha, I should look into trademark – I’ll get my team of lawyers on it 😉 Thank you Doc!

  17. When is the T-shirt coming? I’ll be waiting…

    • Dave @ Accidental FIRE says:

So great to hear from you Susan after all this time! Now that you’re home all day and quarantined like the rest of us you should do a blog post, would be great to see what you’re up to.

And square charts don’t generally look good on shirts but I threw it out there anyway… 🙂

  18. Deanna says:

Not only was this infographic genius you have so many good lines in here…
    time to start wearing pants
    viral is better than virus
    keep creating sh*t

Thanks for the laugh!! Enjoy your success!

  19. ESI Money says:

A friend of mine from college posted it on Facebook. I asked him if he read your site and he said a friend of his sent him to it.

I told him I knew you and he said he wondered how all the FIRE people were doing these days.

I said we (as a group) are mostly fine as long as we had a margin of safety built in (which we all should).

That was it. I think he was unimpressed with us. Hahaha!

Anyway, congrats on the success. It’s well-deserved!

    • Dave @ Accidental FIRE says:

Us FIRE folks are doing just fine, real fine. We’re financial preppers 🙂

      Thanks for the kudos dude!

  20. Tawcan says:

That’s awesome. You never know what it takes to go viral. 🙂

  21. SharonW says:

I’ve been studying Spanish, and rasurarse is a reflexive verb that means to shave oneself. I’ve never run across puama though, I agree it’s probably local slang for sweatpants in Honduras. Keep up the great work! I really enjoy your satirical graphics and also your outdoorsy content.

    • Dave @ Accidental FIRE says:

Thank you for that! I used to be pretty decent in Spanish when my job was sending me to Central & South America a lot, but that was a long time ago and my skills have lapsed. And thanks for your readership, I appreciate it!

  22. Team CF says:

Boom! Gosh this is good, glad to see you go viral. It was a damn funny one at that, but the fall out is hilarious!

  23. Marla says:

    Awesome, congratulations Dave!

    • Dave @ Accidental FIRE says:

Thanks Marla, I just saw your guest post on MMM, congrats to you too on your blogging debut – great job!

  24. Prepare2FIRE says:

Dave….keep up with the humor…it’s sorely needed now. I’ve been out of sorts lately and just getting caught up with your posts. A little chuckle this morning is just what I needed!

  25. Swantje B. says:

    The bulgarian items are

    кафе (kafe) = coffee
    сутиени (sustieni) = bras
    кола (kola) = car
    Интернет (Internet) = internet
    бръснене (brusnene) = to shave
    Анцузи (antsusi) = tracksuits

  26. Wait, that was you??? Congrats for winning the internet!

I like the takeaway of ‘keeping at it.’ Too many people give up before they even step into the arena! The more you put out there, the more chances for getting lucky.

    • Dave @ Accidental FIRE says:

Thanks Luxe, even novices like me can get lucky and hit one out of the park, just gotta keep swinging 🙂

  27. Martin says:

Dave, you made the big time here on the National broadcastEr business report… I spotted your good work, well done!

    • Dave @ Accidental FIRE says:

Ha yeah thanks, too bad it’s one of the numerous recreations but either way it’s my idea 🙂 Thanks for sending that!

  28. Ginger says:

I found your infographic on Facebook without a source and have had fun sharing it and not one person disagreed with it. Then I was reading budgets are sexy and he had a link to this article. I laughed so hard. I’ve in FI community for over a decade and somehow missed a blogger who went viral. I’ll have to stick around!

    • Dave @ Accidental FIRE says:

So glad you like the graphic and post Ginger. Any friend of J Money is a friend of mine – and please stick around, I’d love to have you as a reader!

  29. WAE says:

    rasurarse = shaving

pijama = pajamas [not “PUAMA”; that font makes the I and J close together look like U]

I might add wearing pants as increasing in importance. Especially while attending web meetings.

    • Dave @ Accidental FIRE says:

Haha – THANKS for the help on the translation and font interpretation! And pants are destined to make a comeback
