T.G.I.F. Friday: Volume 132

Welcome to “Thank God I’m FI” Friday, Volume #132!

Here are some things I really like and that you might too.

Financial Independence/Work Life/Retirement Articles & Content

The Real Impact Of Return-To-Office Mandates On Productivity At Work (possible paywall) (Forbes) – “The data speaks for itself. Return-to-office mandates lower engagement, morale, productivity and retention—all without benefiting the bottom line. Instead of forcing employees back to the office, listen to what they want and need.

An Anthropologist Explains How Work Has Shaped Society (Video) (Big Think) – “From hunter-gatherers to the American Dream: This is how humanity’s definition of “work” has developed over time.

Video

I present to you the archerfish.  This little guy, who lives in Sri Lanka, has developed a special talent to get his prey.  He’s even learned to take into account and compensate for the spatial offset of objects from refraction!  It makes my head explode.  Nature is so wonderful and whack!

What I’m Grateful For

Autumn. I know it’s guaranteed to come every year but every time it does it reminds me of how awesome it is, especially after our hottest summer in years.

Lyrically Speaking

He stays here for the tax break
Yet every job he’s had he hates
Up late playing video games
It’s his only real escape

From “Team Sport” by Colatura

Colatura are a four piece band from Pittsburgh.  They are self described as between shoegaze and dreampop, or “dreamgaze” as singer Jennica Best said in a radio interview.  If you liked the band Alvvays that I highlighted in T.G.I.F. Friday Volume 125, then you might like Colatura, or at least their post 2021 stuff.  I really like the way they blend synths with guitars to create a full sound that’s more sophisticated than mass-produced pop, but that also has clear ties back to roots music and organic instruments.  They just released a new single this past week called “Do You Miss Her” which is great.  If you like them support them on Bandcamp

As for the lyrics above, thankfully I can’t say I’ve hated every job I’ve had.  At times I actually loved my job.  But those days are long gone and I love my freedom far more than any job.  I don’t need an escape, I have financial independence.

Miscellaneous

The federal loophole that allows food companies to decide what’s safe for you to eat – “There is a growing awareness in the medical community and in the general public that we cannot continue to allow our kids to be addicted to processed foods get sick and die at an earlier age than they otherwise would.”

Study finds intense exercise may suppress appetite in healthy humans – “A vigorous workout does more to suppress hunger levels in healthy adults than does moderate exercise, and females may be especially susceptible to this response…”

Port workers are at war with automation. Can they win? – “They have until January 15 to hash out a new contract. Here’s what’s at stake.

Archerfish, awesome. I must go find more information. Thank you.

    • Dave @ Accidental FIRE says:

Yes! There’s plenty of vids out there, and I think they may have covered it in one of the BBC Attenborough documentaries but not positive

  2. Cameron says:

Most Articles referencing the “terrible” return to workplace model focus on two key points: productivity and morale. But are these the most important topics? If you have thousands of contact centre employees now working at home domestically and overseas without supervision, how are companies preventing data breaches?

    • Dave @ Accidental FIRE says:

Don’t get me started on data breaches…. I think I got 4 or 5 notices this year. We’re all victims of that unless you live under a rock.

  3. Joe says:

If the fish is always underwater, it wouldn’t care about refraction, right? The video is very cool, though. I didn’t know it had to adjust the stream shape for distance.

    • Dave @ Accidental FIRE says:

The refraction is from the water to air transition, like when you look at a straw and it appears offset under the water. So the fish’s eyes are underwater and it’s mouth is not when spitting and it’s compensating. It’s bonkers!
