T.G.I.F. Friday: Volume 23

Welcome to “Thank God I’m FI” Friday, Volume #23!

Here are some things I really like and that you might too.

Finance Articles

Action Creates Motivation (Get Rich Slowly) – “When I think back to all of the years I wallowed in debt, I see now that much of my trouble was an unwillingness to take action.”

So You have Inherited Money (Full Time Finance) – “Now what?  Let’s explore the technical aspects of an inheritance.”

Who’s Inspired Me

Kate Courtney.

Mountain biking originated in America.  Yet over the years the Euros have been dominating us on both the men’s and women’s side of the house.  Enter Kate Courtney.  After tearing up the scene in the under-23 circuit in 2017, she gave America it’s first gold medal in the women’s elite cross country race at the 2018 UCI World Championships since 2001.  She repeated it in 2019.  She just shows up and wins, and it’s not like she doesn’t have amazing competition.  The women’s cross country scene is awash in talent.  She just beats them.

If you wanna know why just follow her on Instagram.  She does the work.

What I’m Grateful For

Being able to work from home at my 20 hour a week W2 job.  It rocks.  If I’m working and I feel a nap coming on, which is pretty much every day I’m working, then I nap.  There’s nobody to see it, no stigma attached.  If I want real sunshine, I work outside.  It keeps me healthy, which is exactly the opposite of an office environment.

Lyrically Speaking

Inside my TV I
Never stop to wonder why I’m
Way down now
I’m way down now
Some faceless get on the screen
The most honest man I’ve ever seen
I’m way down now
I’m way down now
Won’t you show me something true today
C’mon and show me anything but this

From “Way Down Now“, by World Party

I’m not positive if Karl Wallinger of World Party wrote this verse about TV advertising, but to me it always was.  The lyrics of the song as a whole are pretty dystopian and sardonic, and it’s one of those songs you might write off as having no meaning at all.

But I always liked that first verse.  I cut cable a long time ago, and ads were a big factor in that.  They never showed me anything true, they just brought me way down.  And social media ain’t much different…

Another really good one from J.D. (“Action Creates Motivation”).

  3. Good stuff Dave,

I found the post on “So you have inherited money” most interesting. Now I only wish I had a rich aunt or uncle:)

More importantly, I agree that we have a lot to be grateful for and happy for you how your job with the flexibility to work from home is going for you.

I agree, the word “rich” to describe anyone in my family has never been used. Until I came along 😉
