T.G.I.F. Friday: Volume 30

Welcome to “Thank God I’m FI” Friday, Volume #30!

Here are some things I really like and that you might too.

Finance Articles

Demand The Best For Yourself (1500 Days To Freedom) – “How long will you wait to start demanding the best for yourself? Your time is finite. Don’t wait too long.”

The Three Sides of Risk – (Morgan Housel) – “The tail-end consequences of risk – like pandemics, and depressions – are what make the pages of history books. They’re all that matter.”

Video

Mountain climbing can be dangerous.  Sometimes mountains just, well, move.  Watch this incredible video of a massive landslide in Kyrgyzstan.  Is that huge rock pillar at the top going to go?

Who’s Inspired Me

Derek Louderman.

Ok so this is not his real name and I won’t have any links here for you to read.  But Derek is one of my cycling buddies and I found out a little while back that he went part time at his job and semi-retired!  And like me, he’s using the extra time gained back to start a business.  He doesn’t know about my blog so he won’t see this.  But it makes me warm inside to know that the many conversations that started with him asking me “how are you off work all of these weekdays again?” definitely planted the seed in his head and propelled him to a better life.  This past week he raved about the slower pace of life since he paired down at his job, and the luxury of working from home.

So I inspired him, and that fact that he made a major life-changing decision inspired me right back.

What I’m Grateful For

Businesses that still fix things. I recently damaged my beloved three and a half year old LG X Power cell phone.  I found a small business run by just two guys who fixed it for $40.  The phone was only $90 new and has tons of life left.  So I’m gonna ride her out and delay putting another one into the world as long as I can.

Lyrically Speaking

The waiting is the hardest part
Every day you get one more yard
You take it on faith, you take it to the heart
The waiting is the hardest part

From “The Waiting“, by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

This is my favorite Tom Petty song, hands down. And that’s saying something because the man wrote so many amazing songs. Petty would have turned 70 on October 20th and he’s still so respected and revered that musicians from around the world contributed to a 2+ hour birthday tribute that was streamed live.  There were some amazing covers of Petty songs from some big-time artists but unfortunately all the videos have been taken down due to copyright violations.  The Lumineers did a nice live version of their Petty cover of “Walls”, of which you can hear their studio version.

So you’ve made some changes in your money life, maybe big ones. Now it’s all about the waiting…… the waiting for compounding interest to do its thing.  It’s the hardest part.

Miscellaneous

The Rise And Fall Of Getting Things Done (possible paywall)“How personal productivity transformed work – and failed to”

Anger is temporary madness: the Stoics knew how to curb it“Anger just isn’t necessary, and in fact it usually gets in the way.”

Mental illness is on the rise due to COVID-19. Could psychedelic drugs be the ‘game changer’? – “Current medical approaches to mental illnesses are about symptom management and long-term control of symptoms. They’re not about healing”

  1. Demand The Best For Yourself – really good article, agree with you!

  2. i don’t know if i’ve demanded the best from myself but i can surely say i have been my authentic self for a long time now. it’s very liberating not to live according to who is watching.

i read that productivity piece and it just reminded me of being part of a large organization and all the “transformational systems” over that years that didn’t change squat. hey, let’s take some program from a person who never really solved anything yet is anointed a guru, pay a lot of money for it, and try and shoehorn it into spots where it doesn’t make sense. it’s really what makes dilbert so perfect. common sense in business must have died a long time ago.

Man I love your take on things. Totally true and I didn’t think of it that way but it again shows the genius of Dilbert. And Cal Newport has a great critical eye for this stuff

Wow – the 3 Sides of Risk is a powerful story!

Never before considered the “tail end risks” in this way. Really insightful post which makes one think about why our risk tolerances are what they are.

  4. I would have to say I have room for improvement here, especially since quarantines kicked in. I need to push myself harder to get to where I was. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. Take care.
