T.G.I.F. Friday: Volume 61

Welcome to “Thank God I’m FI” Friday, Volume #61!

Here are some things I really like and that you might too.

Financial Independence/Retirement Articles

Everything Must Be Paid for Twice (Raptitude) – “Paying a second price, unpleasant as it sounds, is a process you can acquire a taste for, and when you do, it’s exhilarating.”

Relax, it’s OK to slow down (Tawcan) – “Most people have their 9-5 full-time job, then they hustle on the side. For some, it’s not just one side hustle, it’s multiple side hustles”

Video

Danny MacAskill is the best stunt rider in the world, he’s Spiderman on a bike.  He’s at it again, but this time he intersperses lots of crash footage with his successful attempts.  We all know it’s more fun to watch it when these crazy people don’t make it.

Who’s Inspired Me

Nick Willis.

For this one I’m just going to use the text from the YouTube video that you should watch –

“Few runners have been more consistent year in and year out than 5-time Olympian, 2-time Olympic medalist and now Tracksmith athlete manager, Nick Willis. At the stroke of midnight on January 1st, the thirty-eight-year-old Very Nice Track Club athlete attempted to run a sub-four-minute mile for the 20th consecutive year. Was Nick able to keep his streak going? In the very first few minutes of 2022, we watched his race unfold – and were reminded that it’s never too early, or too late to keep chasing your goals.”

A sub-4 minute mile 20 years in a row.  Nucking Futs!  Give it a watch, seeing people run this fast, especially a 38 year old, is inspiring as hell.

What I’m Grateful For

The nurses, doctors, and staff at the hospital where a family member just spent a week in critical condition.  They were amazing.

Lyrically Speaking

I got friends still hangin’ around
Wonderin’ what they’re gonna do
They are still in the old college town
Drinkin’ in the old bar room

From “Radio On” by From Good Homes

From Good Homes formed in the Americana renaissance of the mid 1990’s when bands like Wilco, Whiskeytown, The Jayhawks, and the Old 97’s were defining the genre.  They never got as big as those bands, but if you ask me they should have been.  The album that “Radio On” appears on called Open Up The Sky was released in 1995 and was one of the first CD’s I ever owned.  It’s one of those things I can’t explain, but the songs just hit me at a time in my life that made them resonate.  For a long time it was a desert island disc for me, and I still love it dearly.

As for the lyrics above, a few weeks ago I saw a social media post from one of my old Baltimore friends way back in my functional alcoholic days of the early 1990’s.  He was going to the same bar we used to get drunk at every weekend.  I’m so glad that’s not my life anymore.

Miscellaneous

Lack of sleep in middle age may increase dementia risk “The findings suggest that short sleep duration during midlife could increase the risk of developing dementia later in life.”

Remarkably, NASA has completed deployment of the Webb space telescope “I dare say that 99 percent of the world will not know or realize or care to understand the amount of work and engineering and paperwork that went into building, launching, and deploying the James Webb Space Telescope. But those of us who know, we know. And we are in awe.”

How to Make Better Decisions: Understanding Bias vs. Noise “To make effective judgements, we not only have to have information, but we also need a system and process in place for navigating bias and noise”

That’s becoming more common, we had a kid in the DC suburbs recently consistently hitting sub-4 minutes. Human progress is amazing
