T.G.I.F. Friday: Volume 68

Welcome to “Thank God I’m FI” Friday, Volume #68!

Here are some things I really like and that you might too.

Financial Independence/Retirement Articles

Financial Independence in a HCOL Area (The Fioneers) – “Living in a high cost of living area or urban environment can be very expensive. But it doesn’t have to be as expensive as you might expect.

What Do We Measure Success By? (Rich Life Habits) – “Success can be tough to define. We all want it but most of us have a hard time defining success.

Video

Urban downhill mountain biking.  In a nutshell, it’s insane.  Watch this amazing video of the first continuous drone coverage of a urban downhill mountain bike run (where the drone follows right behind the rider).  The first part of the video details the crazy workarounds and technology the drone pilots had to come up with to make it happen.  If you just want to see the final run that they captured it starts at 8:12.  Balls of steel.

Who’s Inspired Me

Jacky Hunt-Broersma.

Hunt-Broersma is an amputee athlete.  You think that would limit her in some ways.  Nope.  She just recently finished running 102 marathons in 102 days breaking the woman’s record.  She then did two more marathons just to make it that much harder for anyone to break again.  And oh yeah, the male record for consecutive daily marathons is only 59, so there’s that.

And along the way she raised $67,000 to help other amputee runners get the expensive “blade” prostheses they need to run.  You can read an ESPN piece about her amazing achievement here.

What I’m Grateful For

That I got to do a century bike ride with an old friend who moved away from the D.C. area years ago.  Friendships born over hard cycling miles are enduring ones.

Lyrically Speaking

Tailored suits, chauffeured cars
Fine hotels and big cigars
Up for grabs, all for a price
Where the red hot girls keep on dancing through the night

From “Moneytalksby AC/DC

If you come to this part of T.G.I.F. Friday for my mostly obscure and eclectic music selections, well, sorry.  It’s about time I highlighted one of the most famous songs about money in the rock canon.  And let’s face it, AC/DC just friggin’ rocks.  I’m often a bit suspicious of anyone who doesn’t like them, haha.

As for the lyrics above, where is this mystical paradise where red hot girls dance through the night?  Please comment below if you know.

Miscellaneous

Google, Amazon Make Big Moves Into Healthcare “The move also raises questions about the ever-growing power and influence of such firms and their real motivation for getting into healthcare.”

Free Speech: A History from Socrates to Social Media “The parochialism of American culture wars has warped the debate around free speech in the US.”

Does walking 10 minutes per day extend your life? (Hint: No.) “Either I completely dozed for the past ten years, or the author of a recent news article pulled data from some farcical study. Let’s take a closer look.”  Dave’s comment – I love how Attia takes down and exposes these horribly done studies… always be skeptical of these mainstream media health headlines.

I figured you might have a good idea. Very interesting, Thailand has always been on my list, I’ll get there one day

Thanks for including my post on measuring success! Now that the weather is getting warmer, I’ve been taking my bike for rides more and more as well. Maybe we can meet up one time.

I’ve been listening to a “money talks” song recently but I doubt it’s your style –

You being a bit suspicious of anyone who doesn’t like AC/DC made me laugh. Brought to mind a visit back in 2013 to Dark Horse Brewing in Marshall, Michigan. There was a sign on the jukebox instructing you NOT to play AC/DC or Wagon Wheel. The internet shows that there’s more bands in the owner’s “dislike” category in 2018…and “shitty, overplaying music” is a very broad category, IMO.

That urban downhill video. Holy shit. MAD SKILLZ! So cool.

Those folks are nucking futs! One slight mistake and they’re either in the hospital for a long time or possibly dead. Crazy
