T.G.I.F. Friday: Volume 102

Welcome to “Thank God I’m FI” Friday, Volume #102!

Here are some things I really like and that you might too.

Financial Independence/Work Life/Retirement Articles

The Fun Bucket – Overcoming the Frugality Mindset (Mark’s Money Mind)“…it is very hard to shift from an ingrained accumulation mindset to the required distribution mindset needed to actually begin living off and spending down the assets you worked so hard to accumulate.

Are You Rich? (Bloomberg)“Billionaires know they are. Low-wage workers are very well aware that they aren’t. But vast swaths of America’s “regular rich” don’t feel that way, and it’s keeping everybody down.”

Video

Enjoy this utterly terrifying 5 minute video of freighter ships in stormy seas out on the ocean.

What I’m Grateful For

The massive toad who calls my backyard pond home. He (or she) rules it like a boss, holding court every morning on the same rock.

King of the pond

Lyrically Speaking

My old man told me “Push a pen not a shovel,”
“Head up high, keep yourself out of trouble”

From “When the Coal Dust Settled” by Tom Jenkins

Jenkins is a fast rising Welsh singer songwriter with one full length release and some EPs to his name. He straddles the lines between rock, folk, and pop with a quasi-falsetto voice and some great songs. His full length release called Misery In Comfort is excellent and highly recommended.

As for the lyrics above, my old man did not give me that advice, but growing up in Baltimore City and seeing what was around me made it pretty clear and obvious early on.

Miscellaneous

T cells burn out just a few hours after encountering cancer tumors – “Altogether, our research suggests that T cells in tumors are not necessarily working hard and getting exhausted. Rather, they are blocked right from the start.

Can you manipulate your brain to stop your food cravings? – “This could be groundbreaking research in terms of advancing the treatments of certain eating disorders.

A cargo ship that harnesses wind power has set sail on its maiden journey – “The WindWings technology deployed on the Pyxis Ocean could cut fuel consumption by 30%

Hi Dave. Your blog is great. I wanted to thank you for sharing the ships in storms video. I’m a huge fan of storm and loved this video. I know it scared most people but you made my day!

    • Dave @ Accidental FIRE says:

I too love storms, to me there’s nothing better than sitting on the porch watching a thunderstorm. But there’s something about the thought of being caught in a massive storm in the middle of the ocean with massive waves – to me it’s horrifying. The ocean is begging to swallow you. But it’s amazing to watch. Thanks for the kudos and for reading!

  3. Great update, the frugality mindset is fun to play around with and challenge yourself to see how it feels when you “disobey”

Loved Tom Jenkins music! Thanks for the link and introduction!

  5. I couldn’t watch past 1:24. When I was a kid, I went through Hurricane Bob on a cruise ship for 22 hours. It looked just like the video. Changed the trajectory of my life, I’m sure.

In any event, love the toad! He’s so sweet!

    • Dave @ Accidental FIRE says:

Wow sorry to hear that but glad you survived. Traumatic stuff like that experienced as a kid can leave lasting marks for sure, I have some experience with that myself.
